April 24, 2015 – As work progresses on the massive Galway development in St. John’s south end, Danny Williams visited the project’s namesake in Ireland. Mr. Williams along with his brother Tom Williams visited Galway, Ireland this month and met with the Mayor of the City of Galway, Councillor Donal Lyons, and Chief Executive of Galway City, Council Brendan McGrath.
“When we announced Galway last year, I touched upon our family’s deep ties to our Irish ancestry, including my mother’s maiden name of ‘Galway’,” said Mr. Williams. “I have been to Ireland many times but this was particularly special as Tom and I visited this unique city with a focus on how we might make connections to our project back home.”
Williams discussed the project with the Mayor and Chief Executive, including laying out the three phases (industrial, retail and residential) and sharing his vision for creating a “live, work and play” community with large, open green spaces. “I impressed upon him our goal to build a place where residents and workers alike feel a strong sense of place, which is something very much a part of the Irish heritage as well,” added Williams. “Galway is renowned as a lively city, with various music, food and other festivals and celebrations attracting people from all over. Indeed, it is considered to be one of the most exciting cities in Ireland. And obviously we would love to emulate that spirit and atmosphere here at home.”
In addition to the meeting, the Lord Mayor gave the Williams’ a full tour of the historic city including stops at the Spanish Arch, Lynches Window, Eyre Square and of course, Galway Bay.
“We agreed to keep in touch as we progress with Galway on this side of the Atlantic, and to share ideas on how we can potentially incorporate some aspects of the Irish Galway into our own project.”
Galway is a project of DewCor, and is located directly off the TCH, close to both the Port of St. John’s and the International Airport. It is also adjacent to the fastest growing communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, making it a preferred location for businesses to operate.
